Late Victorian Gothic Revival Oak & Ebonised Dining Chair, attr. to Lamb of Manchester

An exceptional Victorian leather upholstered oak & ebonised dining chair from around 1870-90, undoubtedly once part of a set, attributable to a first class maker and in very good condition for its age, with show-frame back, the top rail with hand-hold to the rear and inset with ebonised wheel-spoke medallions, the edges bevelled & ebonised, the bottom rail carved with dentils and concave fan, the square back-rest with upholstered pad, covered in olive green leather, gilt- & black-tooled to the edges and fitted with large gilt-brass cruciform bosses, over square sabre rear legs, the over-stuffed seat covered in matching olive green leather with the same gilt-brass fittings, on moulded & ebonised plinth, on substantial turned & fluted tapering front legs, on the original brass shoes and ceramic casters, this outstanding example of the late 19thC cabinetmaker's craft will impress in the most elegantly tasteful of homes, whether period-furnished or more contemporary in style and is sure to attract the admiring attention of your guests.

Lamb of Manchester:

Founded by James Lamb (1816-1903) in the middle of the 19thC, one of the leading cabinetmakers of the time, the firm had a workshop in Castlefield and their main premises were in Dalton Street, with vast furniture showrooms over three floors. Acclaimed for his dedication to high quality construction and artistic design, Lamb used only the finest quality materials and workmanship. His designers included Alfred Waterhouse, Bruce Talbot and Charles Bevan, who said he was the most aesthetically advanced furniture craftsman outside London at the time. The company was renowned for richly upholstered, finely carved Victorian dining chairs, armchairs and sofas. In the late 1860s, Lamb started making inlaid pieces to the designs of Charles Bevan and became one of the top three manufacturers of Gothic Revival, Aesthetic and Anglo-Japanese furniture of the time.

This is a late 19thC piece, so you may expect the mature character & patina that only develops with considerable age. The leather is generally in good, sound condition but with some wear around the corners of the seat, which is visible in the pictures. Please also note that the leather on the back of the chair has faded to more of a tan in colour. Because of the age of the webbing, the seat has sunk but is perfectly serviceable as it is. In summary, this chair is in very good, clean & sound condition for its age and is ready to use in your home.
