Late 19thC Continental? Mahogany Writing or Games Table with Detachable Bank of 4 Drawers on Fold-Out Top & 2 further Frieze Drawers
An exceptional and unusual late Victorian mahogany piece, richly-grained throughout, with either Irish or French origins, depending upon your point of view and in very good condition, with a detachable bank of 4 drawers, the upper pair with roundel-turned pulls and the lower ones with escutcheon only but opened with working lock & key, the locks with a clever double turn that provides an option to have the upper drawers either locked or not, the cabinet on plinth moulding and with gallery up-stand and urn finials on corner posts, the top with wave decorated edges to front & sides, the drawer fronts with undulating edge beading, the fold-out top also with wave decorated edges and opening both to the front & rear on small lopers with roundel turned pulls, to reveal a pale cotton fabric covered gaming surface, over a plain frieze that incorporates two further in-line drawers with matching fronts, escutcheons and working lock & key, on spiral-turned & tapering baluster legs on ball feet, this impressive writing, side, tea or card table will stand out, even in the most distinguished of homes, whether period-furnished or more contemporary in style, more than deserving of the admiring and envious attention it will undoubtedly attract.
Top Width 90cm x Depth fully Closed 49.5cm (35.5" x 19.5"), Depth with Front Open 74cm (29.25") & with Front & Rear both Open 98.5cm (38.75")

This is a late Victorian piece from around 1870-90, so you may expect the mature character & patina that only develops over a considerable time, together with very minor wear & tear, including a very small chip in the veneer of the RHS frieze drawer but, otherwise, it's in very good condition, ready to use in your home.
