Victorian French Gilt-Painted Triple Plate Gesso Mirror with Bevelled Glass & Classical Frieze
A French regency-style mirror from the Second Empire (1848-70) or slightly later but generally in good condition for its age, with triple bevelled glass in a gesso frame with later gilt paint, having a projecting moulded cornice over a concave architrave with musket balls, the whole stepped forward over end pilasters with elaborate Corinthian capitals and reeded columns resting on moulded & stepped bases, with a deep frieze over the triple mirror that sports a classical plaster relief of maidens welcoming victorious returning soldiers or gladiators and a chariot pulled by lions with a winged herald above, the intermediate uprights adorned with hanging strings of graduated campanula, this attractive mirror will impress in the most stylish of contemporary interiors and, given the current trend for mixing antique, modern and both industrial & shabby chic items to create a distinctive setting for statement pieces, fully-deserving of the admiration it will surely attract.
O/All Width at Cornice 99.5cm x Height 86.5cm (39.25" x 34")
Mirror Widths 14cm & 37cm (5.5" & 14.5") x Height 52cm (20.5")
Depth 9.75cm (ca 4")
This is a genuine antique piece, originally from the second half of the 19thC, so you may expect some wear & tear commensurate with age, including some minor losses & cracks to the plasterwork of the frieze and some knocks & chips to the gilt & gesso, particularly at the corners and, in addition, there is some modern work to the back panelling but, otherwise, it's generally in good, clean & sound original condition for its age, ready to take its place in your home.
