Early 20thC Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge Smoker's Cabinet
It's not often that I come across a piece that is so redolent of a back-story...in this case, just a smoker's cabinet from somewhere in the first half of the 20th century, with half-moon top and matching base, both with rolled edges, plain panelled door with working lock & key and emblazoned with the college crest, opening upon an interior fitted for a smoker's accoutrements...but the little key tag says 'Key to Boat Cupboard' and the coat of arms is for Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge. Then there's the unusual cylindrical back...but the clincher is the fact that both it and the door must have been close to a roaring open fire, over a considerable period of time, causing the varnish to crackle & bubble alarmingly. Rather than doing anything to restore this piece, I shall leave well alone, in order to preserve its narrative and offer it as is. Surely a Caian alumnus or the college itself will want it back?
Width of Top 36.25cm x Depth 19.75cm (14.25" x 7.75") & Height 49.75cm (19.5")
NB: Dimensions are measured in centimetres and then converted to approximate equivalents in inches.
This piece dates from the first half of the 20thC, so you may expect the mature character & patina of age, together with minor wear & tear commensurate with normal use but, barring the specific effects of heat noted in the description above, it's in good, clean & sound condition and ready to use in your home.
