Early-Mid 18th Century Walnut Fall-Front Bureau with Fitted Interior
A great early period piece, most likely from the reign of George II but in good condition for its age, with highly-figured walnut veneer throughout, cross-banded and also with a diagonal inlay, the fall-front book-matched and with fret-cut brass plate to the escutcheon, together with working lock & key, opening on to a fitted interior and resting on retracting lopers with Dutch drop-handles, the interior with gilt-tooled leather skiver and fitted with a range of nine serpentine-fronted drawers, also with Dutch drop-handles, under eight pigeon holes and a central compartment with locking door, flanked by two classical pilasters that conceal narrow, pull-out boxes, the fall-front over two short and two graduated full-width drawers with fret-cut brass plates and swan-neck drop-handles, all on a thumb-moulded plinth and scrolled bracket feet, this lovely bureau will impress in the most elegant of period-furnished homes, fully-deserving of the admiring attention that it will undoubtedly attract.
Width at Top 82.5cm x Depth 47.5cm (32.5" x 18.75")
Width at Base 87cm x 48.75cm (34.25" x 19.25")
Height 96.5cm (38")
This piece most probably dates from the period 1727-60, so you may expect the mature character & patina of great age, together with wear & tear commensurate with normal use; the fall-front is slightly bowed, so that it doesn't close completely tightly on one side. Otherwise, it's in good, clean & sound original condition and ready to use in your home.
NB: Neither the handles nor the bracket feet will be original and, in all likelihood, the piece would have been made with bun feet but it is very common for such changes to have been made as fashions changed in the later Georgian and Victorian periods.
